Having seen Tyne Daly's steamroller performance, I was pleasantly surprised by Bernadette's soft, sexy, almost girlish take. I agree with others, it did feel like her Rose should have been the one in the spotlight, she had such an innate charm and charisma. I saw her just before opening night and again almost a year later and must have been lucky because I got two equally great performances.

Controversial opinion though, I saw Hairspray in August 2002 and knew by the end of Act I that Marissa Jaret Winokur would be walking away with a Tony that season.
