I saw it late in previews (the first time I ever saw Gypsy) and thought the whole show was incredible, including of course Rose's Turn. I went back late in the run with my family, and also enjoyed it very much - that was a Saturday matinee, and it seemed Bernadette Peters was holding back a little on Rose's Turn, perhaps to make sure she had enough voice left for the evening performance too (it wasn't the tour-de-force that's preserved in the CD and the Tonys performance). But I remember my grandmother turning to my mother after Rose's Turn, and telling her that she had tears in her eyes.
The production was taped for the Theatre on Film and Tape Archive (TOFT) at Lincoln Center, so you are able to watch in its entirety. The only possible setback is if you need special permission to view it, but that might not be the case, I don't know.
I also very much enjoyed the Patti LuPone version just 5 years later. |
