Vivian Blaine: Why Not More Roles, Better Roles

Vivian Blaine's Adelaide is one of the great performances of all time. Yes the Merm beat her out of the Tony, but the Merm really got it for the many roles she played pre-Tony. Blaine really did help create the role. Originally, her part only included the club numbers. So impressed was Loesser with her that he wrote Adelaide's Lament for her. And boy did that create a character and a role. She was one of the few who repeated the role in the movie. She showed her acting chops when she took over the lead in A Hatful of Rain. She then starred in Say,Darling, a play about a musical, a satire of the creation of the (fictionalized) The Pajama Game. She got great reviews, the show ran for nine months. She then starred (with others) in Enter Laughing. Then. Stock. A tour of Zorba! A replacement Joanne in Company. More stock. Hal Prince spoke highly of her work. She was a vacation replacement Madame Horstense in 1983 revival of Zorba!. Club acts. She also prior to Guys and Dolls was one of the stars of the R & H remake of State Fair in '45. She was cheated. We were cheated. She also stepped up in the fight against AIDS when the President and the Mayor of NYC. did nothing. At least Reagan sort of apologized. Koch did not such thing.
