I had the privilege of working on an awards show during which Ms. Blaine received an award for her work speaking out about AIDS when so few were doing anything. Bea Arthur (a longtime friend of Blaine's) surprised Blaine, who thought she was there as a presenter, with the award. It was a rather boozy evening for the two of them (definitely more so for Ms. Arthur) and Ms. Blaine was extremely surprised and grateful to be acknowledged by an LGTB+ group at a time when so few were doing anything to help. I think this was 1983 or 1984. (Robert Preston and Rita Morena were our hosts for the evening.) Ms. Blaine was lovely, absolutely no pretension, a total pro at what she thought she was doing (presenting an award).

I love watching her in the Fox musicals, especially State Fair and Three Little Girls in Blue (she is so beautifully lit in State Fair, even her hair has a key light!). BTW, she was the star of the film Greenwhich Village in which you can see for a very fleeting moment the Revuers, the trio comprised of Betty Comden, Adolph Green and Judy Holliday. Holliday has a line or two but their routine ended up on the cutting room floor.
