I don't think anyone is questioning the difficulty in moving a show from a 300 seater to a major Broadway house but your other points...hmm...there was less "feelgood nonsense" in London than you might think. The show was a witty, albeit cynical look at America's disastrous marriage of politics and religion as a form of entertainment starting with Reaganism and the advent of televangelism. That is hardly fodder for "feelgood nonsense". But you do know that the quote used in the show and mentioned in your post came from Tammy herself? That's who she was and that was what helped make her a household name (aside from the makeup you could see from space, the tear-filled gospel numbers and the scandals that ended her ministry). If it doesn't resonate with Bway audiences then so be it but given the times we live in, you might be suprised how those sentiments aren't nonsense to a fair amount of people. As far as any vibes that are "feelgood" or otherwise, I would never go as far as to assume what Bway audiences will or will not be attracted to. The audience demographics are far too wide to do such pigeonholing but surely you know that? Might also be worth noting that the show is still in previews and based on what Michael Cerveris is sharing on Insta, the work has been rather extensive. The show last night was when most of the new changes went in and he more or less referred to it as their second, first preview. I look forward to seeing how it progresses. |
