The Adrian Bailey situation is a very specific situation, though, and one of the few cases where the dimming is a true gesture more than a tribute to a lifetime of work. Bailey had appeared in 15 Broadway shows by the time he was 51, when he had a horrific accident 16 years ago where he fell over 30 feet on the set of The Little Mermaid because a trapdoor was not secured. He had life-changing injuries that resulted in years of pain and rehab, and it seems like he never really recovered. He never returned to the stage again as far as I know. He has no credits after the accident at IMDB (the film and TV database), either.

I don't know if it was the show's (or anyone's) "fault" per se, but Bailey's life was changed in a terrible way at a relatively young age because he appeared in a Broadway show. The announcement of the partial dimming on his behalf was very unexpected for me, but I was touched by the acknowledgement, 16 years later, of what happened to Bailey. I think the dimming for him is a very nice and appropriate gesture.
