They have a tough reputation from way back. Booing Caruso, for starters!

I agree with Chromolume below that it's really rude to boo a singer. Withholding applause is enough for a performance one doesn't care for. (I sometimes will stand for something others are standing for even if it's not outstanding so I can at least see the performers on stage, but really try not stand if I didn't enjoy it or it was frankly not good.) But I have heard of performances in London and elsewhere where, instead of booing the singers, directors of Eurotrash, particularly violent stagings of operas have been booed on opening night. I think there was a "Guillame Tell" in 2015 that was apparently so violent in its nude rape scene, among other scenes, that while the audience applauded the singers for their efforts, they really let the director have it and know their displeasure when he took a bow.

Only time I've booed in the theater was at a panto (pantomime) in London, where it's tradition to hiss and boo the villain. Those pantos are so much fun, and I've wondered why they never caught on in NY or elsewhere in the U.S.
