Because Marsha Mason knows the show/staging, probably.

More people may know Jen Silverman's work (and not know that they do...she's done a good bit of TV work, but I know of her from her books), but the show is Mia Farrow and Patti LuPone.
It wouldn't be a shock to hear that they never intended for the credited understudy to go on. Not that that should be considered a valid plan these days, but it still could have been the intention. Though there's presumably a point at which the refunds you have to issue because one of your two stars are out vs. the salary you have to pay the one who's on make just canceling the performance the better option.
