It depends on the show but traditionally there were "first night" and "second night" press lists. I don't think that is strictly true now (largely because there are less top tier outlets). That said, if a show is not selling well pre-opening, the lists may merge to at least some extent, and when press seats could be sold at high premiums, the list gets tighter.. Also, bear in mind that not all critics can or need to see the show pre-opening. For instance, some have scheduling conflicts and also those who write reviews for publication only once a week or less might opt to wait even if they are prime reviewers. That is my outside view but maybe someone else will chime in.
