I can't give you a number, but generally speaking, there is a first-night press list and a second-night press list. The former consists of critics (from higher-profile publications/websites) that need to publish their reviews promptly after the opening. When I edited entertainment for the N.Y. Daily News, I was often on the second-night press list, so I'd see the show perhaps the night or two after the opening. I didn't review the show, so it was less urgent to get me into the show immediately, but they still wanted me to see it because I was a voting member of the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle. Depending on availablity, I also got press invites to many shows in late previews. It varied. However, the delineation of first-night and second-night press might be less stringent now. Ryhog is right. If a lead is out, the publicists will contact the press and rebook them for whenever that awards-eligible performer is back in the show. |
