From the age of 10 or so (in 1976) I began reading the NYT (specifically the Friday and Sunday editions) for news about New York theatre- far from where I lived. The annual Summer Theater insert (in May, I think) told me things about the theatres I might be able to visit and I identified shows that I would ask my patient parents to take me to.

By the time I was in my late teens and 20's I'd added The Village Voice and Time Out (the London edition) as well as American Theatre, Plays & Players and of course the annual Burns Mantle TEN BEST PLAYS...series and the THEATER WORLD annuals. Those last two were wonderful primers that I'd explore going back to the 1940's. (I didn't seem to have much curiosity about pre-OKLAHOMA! theatre).

When you had to wait to be in NYC to grab the Voice from a box on the street or get the full, weight Sunday Times (on Saturday night) there was something that made it all a little more special than casually hitting a few keys and having the info on your finger tips. Mind you, I appreciate fora like this where you can ask questions like you have and have a conversation. Even a virtual one.
