I think a good example of B-level director (perhaps I'm being generous here) but A-level institutional leader might be Oskar Eustis at the Public. Despite the tumult of the past few years, he seems to have done quite a good job of leading the organization and maintaining its mission. His strength early in his career was as a dramaturg and producer/curator, though, so I don't think he was ever planning to be a star director like Sher or Wolfe.
