Eustis is best known as the Public's artistic director since 2005, but in the 1980s, he was the resident director, dramaturg and then artistic director at the celebrated Eureka Theatre Company in San Francisco. I saw a number of his productions and thought he was a wonderful director and champion of new playwrights. While at the Eureka, Eustis commissioned Tony Kushner's ''Angels in America,'' and he directed its world premiere at the Mark Taper Forum in L.A.

As his bio at the American Theatre Wing website additionally notes: Eustis has also directed the world premieres of plays by Philip Kan Gotanda, David Henry Hwang, Emily Mann, Suzan-Lori Parks, Ellen McLaughlin and Eduardo Machado, among many others. His production of ''Julius Caesar'' won a Bay Area Critics Circle Award in 1988, and in the quarter-century since then, he has directed and produced Shakespeare across the United States.
