I think Liza didn't strike while the iron was hot, right on the tails of her Oscar. She did have a big success with her tv special "Liza With A Z", but then afterwards didn't really do much in the way of films for a couple of years. I think also that Barbra Streisand's film career was in full throttle during the 1970s and had kind of cornered the market on non-traditional leading ladies at the time. That's a time when there was a big complaint about a lack of starring leading lady roles, with Streisand and Jane Fonda being big box-office and thus getting the lion's share of them, with some other Oscar-winning kind of notable exceptions. Yes, men had non-traditional leading men stars such as Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, Gene Hackman and Robert De Niro, but that's a longer list since there were also more men's starring roles available in films. I think Liza, as much as I enjoy her talents, without the help of her parents and their pedigree on her, might (might) have had a steady career as a supporting character actress. While she'd probably hate hearing it, but if Streisand hadn't had her breakout in "Funny Girl", she'd be considered a character/comedic actress (who sings) herself. Even Liza's role in "Arthur" is, despite the billing, more of a supporting role. I do like her very much in "New York, New York" and "Stepping Out" though, and her concerts and theater performances at her peak were really quite something to experience. That "Cabaret", with Sally being really a terrific character leading lady role with sex appeal, was such a great fit and won her the Oscar put her in a position for maybe a year or two to really capitalize on movie stardom, and for whatever reason, she didn't. (Now I'm ducking -- but actually I am a fan.)
