Patchett's use of themes from Our Town is extraordinary. It appears not just as a plot point in the novel, but also as a theme and variations that appear and re-appear throughout. Unlike Kingsolver's Demon Copperhead, which mimics and repurposes plot and characters from David Copperfield, Tom Lake weaves a wonderful story of its own, while also reflecting thematically on Wilder's play.
