I hate to be a dissenting voice (and I am glad the novel gave others pleasures), but I didn't care much for it--I didn't think Patchett handled the theatre stuff particularly well and that she didn't "earn" the "Our Town" parallels. I have liked other books by her, such as "Bel Canto," which I think is extraordinary, but this one didn't do it for me. But other reviewers and readers disaagree, so mine may be an outlier response--and I thank you for recommending it to me. I'll stck with the Wilder. I have seen a number of the televised versions and like them--I also like Spalding Gray's story of performing it, recounted in "Monster in a Box."
