I was introduced to a "kid" named Sam Valk last week by a 23 year old friend of mine who was a theater camp attendee along with Sam several years ago (before they both recently graduated from college). Sam has written and composed a musical that's been accepted for staging at the NY Winter Theater Festival in December, at the Theater Latia in the Lower East Side of NYC. It looks like fun, based on this synopsis:

Give 'Em What They Want is a show-stopping musical written by Sam Valk that pokes fun at the clichés of old Broadway and turns it on its head with a clever and witty twist. Set against the backdrop of a world filled with kicklines, bright lights, and a gold staircase that leads to laughter, this musical is a delightful romp through the clichés of yesteryear.

At the heart of the story are characters who are as vibrant as the sparkly costumes that adorn the stage. The plot unfolds with a nod to the classic showbiz tale, but with unexpected surprises and a refreshing dose of humor. The audience is in for a treat as the cast navigates the ups and downs of the entertainment world, all while delivering big, flashy Broadway numbers that will leave them on the edge of their seats.

From the electrifying opening number, Give 'Em What They Want, to the extravagant spectacle of The Bigger, The Better, and the heartfelt ballad Perfectly You, each musical moment is a showcase of talent, energy, and love. The musical doesn't just play with the clichés; it embraces them, reinvents them, and invites the audience to join in the fun.

With toe-tapping tunes, witty dialogue, and a surprise show-within-a-show that will leave the audience in stitches, Give 'Em What They Want is a celebration of the magic of Broadway, where the magic isn't just in the lights and the glamour, but in the joy of giving the audience exactly what they want – and a little bit more. Get ready for a night of laughter, love, and the sheer thrill of entertainment as this musical brings the glitz and glamour of Broadway back to life in a way that's fresh, funny, and downright fabulous.

Sam started a GoFundMe to try to raise $3000 for some production costs. and I think to date he's raised about $700, so if you want to throw a few bucks his way in support, I'm sure he'd be very grateful. The link is below.
