| I was curious how many didn't transfer in the last 24 years. Looking at the list of winners since the 70s (when it was established), i guess they don't have a rule for not nominating an old show that hasn't been on the West End yet like Broadway has. Musicals that didn't make it to Broadway: 2000 Honk! 2002 Our House 2004 Jerry Springer 2013 Top Hat (Irving Berlin reworked show) 2015 Sunny Afternoon 2023 Standing at the Sky's Edge 2024 Operation Mincemeat Olivier winners that went to Broadway 2006 Billy Elliot (won Tony) 2012 Matilda 2017 Groundhog Day 2022 Back to the Future Broadway musical transfers to West End: 2001 Merrily We Roll Along 2005 Producers 2007 Caroline, or Change 2008 Hairspray 2009 Jersey Boys 2010 Spring Awakening 2011 Legally Blonde 2014 Book of Mormon 2016 Kinky Boots 2018 Hamilton 2019 Come From Away 2020 Dear Evan Hansen I'm a little surprised that so many of US musicals transferred to West End with success but not the reverse. Far cry from the 80s with Cats, Phantom, Les Mis, Evita and others dominating broadway from West End. So odds are against Operation Mincemeat from transferring. I think we get more British plays transferring to Broadway with successful outcomes. |
