dramedy, thank you for compiling this. I didn't realize that Billy Elliott is the only London-originating musical that won both the Tony and the Olivier in the last 25 years. There are 8 double winners that originated in the US. I think part of the reason I thought there were more were the big West End-originating musicals of the 1980s and 1990s, and also the extreme hype that surrounded both Billy Elliott and Matilda when they came to Broadway.

I think Evita, Cats, and Phantom are the only other double winners that played in London before coming to the US. I believe Sunset Boulevard and Les Mis are the only other Tony winners for Best Musical that originated outside the US.

I don't think any of the non-Broadway transfers listed prior to Operation Mincemeat would have been profitable on Broadway, although Honk has been produced regionally quite a bit in the US.

Of the four US-originating musicals that won the Olivier this century but did not win the Tony for Best Musical, Caroline, or Change lost to Avenue Q at the Tonys but won against Avenue Q at the Oliviers. Come From Away lost to Dear Evan Hansen at the Tonys. Merrily of course was not nominated at all for Best New Musical at the Tonys. I had forgotten that Legally Blonde was not nominated for Best Musical, either -- the nominees that year were Spring Awakening, Grey Gardens, Mary Poppins, and Curtains.
