I never understand why people on this website talk about plays they’ve never seen.

Interesting statement that I mainly disagree with.

I think, especially with musicals where sometimes the cast recording is the ONLY available document of the show left to us, it's certainly acceptable to talk about the show via the connection to the score. Also, does "never seen" equal "never read?" - many of us may have read plays that we've never seen performed onstage - does that mean we can't discuss what we got from the page?

I do think there are times when your general idea makes sense - especially in the banning (attempted or real) of books or productions in this country often due to a reaction about a key topic or key moment in a book or play - but with the protesters never having actually read the source.

But if Wayman has reactions to a show like Applause based on what he's heard on the cast album and what he deduces from there (something most of us have done, I'm sure, especially if we were brought up listening to show recordings), and he wants to discuss them here, I think that's entirely valid.

(BTW - the script to Applause was published and included in volume two of the "Great Musicals Of The American Theatre" set, which is still available to buy 2nd hand.)
