I think a new version of ALL ABOUT EVE makes a lot of sense. There are a lot of parallels here with SOME LIKE IT HOT/SUGAR. Both are based on classic film titles and both got made into Broadway musicals in the early '70's. Both APPLAUSE and SUGAR have fallen out of the repertory and are only rarely performed. And, if SOME LIKE IT HOT wasn't a huge hit, it really did revitalize the story for our contemporary era, something a lot of people loved (but, as is the case with everything, individual mileage may vary).

The story of ALL ABOUT EVE takes some very universal issues and questions and heightens them by placing the story into a glamourous showbizzy Broadway setting. It still speaks to people and the film and the characters are often mentioned as among the best of classic Hollywood.

I'd have loved to have seen Sondheim tackle this story or maybe even Kander and Ebb, who were so good at telling stories about the dark side of show business. But I'd also love for a contemporary team to tackle it and see if they can bring forth the timeless elements while also making the story sing for a new era.
