That is supposedly what happened, but in fact Applause has several characters not in the original story but in the movie. Applause is closer to the radio play that Orr wrote than it is to the original story. Orr said that Mankiewicz heard the radio play, and that's what got him interested. But even the radio play is still very far from either the movie or the musical. And Applause has important characters in the movie but not in either the story or the radio play. Mankiewicz invented a huge amount, much of which was used in Applause.

Comden and Green said that a producer made more sense to them than a critic, and they were right. Addison doesn't make much sense, and there was no real-life counterpart remotely comparable to Addison (which Mankiewicz admitted), who seems to be both a critic and an extremely powerful gossip columnist. I always thought he was a columnist, but he was supposed to be both.

There are other things that don't make much sense to me in All About Eve, but it doesn't really matter.
