Yes to your question. We do seem to be in an era of age-blind casting, which I guess means a return to an old tradition. It seemed like for several decades, there was more emphasis on performers who were reasonably within correct age ranges for roles, but that seems over now.

When it comes to Our Town, the parents of Emily and George have often in the past been cast on the old side. Fairly often actors in their 60s have been cast in one or more of the roles. Mid-50s has been common. 73 certainly sounds old. The wives are probably in their late 30s in acts one and two (and not much older in act three, which is probably just two or three years after act two), and the husbands are probably in their early 40s. I think there's some poignance in casting actors around those ages, or who at least look those ages. The scene between Mrs. Gibbs and Mrs. Webb in act one seems especially sad when you realize that they're probably not yet 40.

I don't think 29 is necessarily too old for Emily. Some actresses who've played the role in the past were at least close to that age. But 39 certainly sounds old for George.

EDIT: I meant to mention that some time relatively recently, in the last 20 years or so, there was a production somewhere (maybe Off-Off Broadway) in which Emily and George were in their 60s or 70s. I think that sounds interesting.
