I meant to mention that some time relatively recently, in the last 20 years or so, there was a production somewhere (maybe Off-Off Broadway) in which Emily and George were in their 60s or 70s. I think that sounds interesting.
That was a 2002 production at Transport Group--Emily and George were played by Barbara Andres and Tom Ligon, both in their early 60s, and the Stage Manager was played by Emma Orelove, who was 12.
