This I did not know!
I do think that speaking a lyric (when written to be sung in the score) CAN be effective, when done sparingly. Just before the pandemic, Isaac Powell screamed one of his "Maria"s -- just one -- within a lyrically sung performance that features dozens of them. (And he took the optional up tenor notes, too.) It absolutely worked. Would have still worked in a 'traditional' production of WEST SIDE STORY.
But we are talking about CAROUSEL, here, the show where Hammerstein II gave the entire genre a master class on when to speak and when to sing. The influence of the bench scene can't be overstated, so I do really appreciate performers who trust that Rodgers & Hammerstein were very intentional about which words got musical notes and which ones didn't.
