Lenya's performance was indelible for us lucky enough to see it. She was major star in Germany of course, though born in Austria. And she was the original Jenny in THREEPENNY OPERA. And in the famous Theater de Lys (Lortel) production, she became the only performer in an off Broadway show to win a Tony for their performance. She is by far the best Fraulein Schneider. She knew the world, she lived the world, and she was a magnetic performer. I liked Bebe in the current frenetic Cabaret - and not to take away from her performance - but in the midst of all the screaming and leering and gyrating going on, Ms Neuwirth and Mr Skybell are the only performers who seem to know who their characters are, and to be performing in a production of CABARET rather than CABARET AT THE KIT KAT CLUB.
