I saw Resnik twice. The first time was at the third performance of the long pre-Broadway tour. This was in Wilmington, Delaware. I and the friends I was with all felt that her performance was very promising, and that she would probably grow in the role and be really great in a few weeks or months. Then I saw her again during the last week or two of the Broadway run. She was giving the exact same performance, but it was not as fresh. Truth is that all the principals seemed to be giving the exact same performances as in Wilmington. Some of them were able to give the illusion of freshness, and some were not.

If you go to youtube and search on Cabaret 1987, you can see her do it. This was shot at the end of the run. All the original principals were still there except Alyson Reed, who had been replaced by Mary Munger.

Anyway, despite what I wrote above, I think Resnik was basically good both times. But I don't think she was capable of going as deep as I would have liked.

As for her Madame Armfeldt, many people seem to love her performance. I only saw her in the telecast. I think she did it very well for an opera singer. She knew how to get the laughs. But I think her performance lacked a bit of throughline, maybe because, again, there was only so deep she could go. For opera, she was considered an exceptional actress, but people who are considered exceptional actors in opera aren't always able to be quite as successful in musicals or plays. Some can, but many can't.
