Not all the critics blasted Haworth. She got some favorable reviews, probably more favorable ones than not. But she was famously panned by Walter Kerr, who otherwise loved the show. He was kind of cruel, and there were at least one or two letters to the Times defending her. Kerr was not alone in finding her less than great, but I think no other critic came even close to reviewing her as negatively as Kerr did.
Just today, because of this discussion, I re-read a followup review in Variety of a mostly replacement cast. The reviewer said that the show was not in good shape at that time, and that somebody needed to get the cast back in shape, but the reviewer said that Haworth had improved a good deal since the opening. |
