For me, the original production of CABARET remains the best. Not every song needs the audience to whoop and scream afterwards. Seeing Lotte Lenya was indeed an honor. She brought an entire life history to the role. Hal Prince was smart to let the number touch us. It did not require an ovation. We were in the moment and that's not a moment for applause. One also forgets how brilliant Joey Grey was and also Jill Haworth. Her Sally was fragiie and touching and she brought a quality I've never seen again to the role. Truly vulnerable and lost, and not a great singer and dancer. She was blasted by the critics and she is so forgotten as the first Sally. Also I would never trade the giant mirror on the audience at the end of the Broadway CABARET for the all tricks that are played now in the theatre. It was shocking and unforgettable.
