My recollection is that Steinbeck once said that the problem with Oscar Hammerstein writing a show about a whorehouse is that he's never been in one.

BTW I also loved the Encores production of Pipe Dream. As a child I remember seeing the cast of the original Broadway production performing a musical number on The Ed Sullivan Show and even returning to that Sunday night TV program a second time later in the Broadway run. I'm also pretty sure that Helen Traubel made a solo appearance on Ed's show during the run of R&H's show on Broadway but I don't remember what songs she sang.

Anyway, my grandmother bought me the OBC LP of Pipe Dream at Goldblatt's in Chicago sometime after we saw the Broadway cast on TV. The actors who played Suzy and Mac in the original 1955 cast were popular performers on two TV kids shows, Howdy Doody and Commando Cody, respectively, at the time.
