I was so grateful for the quality of Pipe Dream at Encores. I will always be partial to the OBCR, but the Encores cast is stellar and I'm glad that much of what was not recorded by RCA in 1955 made it on to the Encores CD.
I don't recall the exact quote, but Steinbeck himself apparently grumbled something to the effect that "they have turned my hooker into a visiting nurse." I actually enjoy the suggestive cheekiness of Hammerstein's lyrics, and if you don't get what he's talking about the onus is less on him than it is on you in my opinion. But I remember those arguments on this board back in 2012, and I remember that most seemed to agree it would take very little tinkering with the book to establish Suzy as a working girl who didn't cut it. Fauna says as much in the book as it is if you're listening. |
