I've never seen ''The Magic Show'' or ''Merlin,'' but I've always been intrigued by Tony trivia. And Doug Henning actually got a 1975 Tony nomination for Featured Actor in a Musical for ''The Magic Show,'' only one of two Tony nominations for the show. (The other being, Grover Dale for directing it.) The nominators almost seemed like they went out of their way to snub it. ''The Magic Show'' wasn't nominated for Best Musical, but ''The Lieutenant,'' a rock opera about Lt. William Calley that ran only 9 performances, was. Nor was ''The Magic Show'' nominated for Stephen Schwartz's score, which include ''Lion Tamer'' and ''West End Avenue,'' which still sometimes pop up in cabaret acts. Instead, the Tonys nominated ''The Wiz'' (which won), ''Mack and Mabel'' and ''The Lieutenant,'' plus ''A Letter From Queen Victoria,'' an ''avant garde opera'' that ran 18 performances. Not that a long run automatically means quality, which is subjective, but ''The Magic Show'' must've done something right to run nearly 2,000 performances.

On the other hand, ''Merlin'' got 5 Tony nominations, including Best Musical, but that might say more about how skimpy that 1982-83 season was.

I imagine ''The Magic Show'' and ''Merlin'' don't get revived, in part, because they require a magician of a certain skill to pull off the tricks.
