Charles Busch headlined a summer stock tour of the play that was problematic. It is a large show and doubling a number of parts wasn’t successful(Nora and Ito had to then play the Upsons?!).
I read a couple of the Auntie Mame novels and while they were fun and breezy, there was no narrative thread at all. Lawrence and Lee gave it emotional shape by having Patrick veering towards the anti semitic and Mame rescuing him. As well as giving the satisfying end of her taking her great nephew in hand.
