That HOW TO SUCCEED was misconceived from the get go by Rob Ashford as a dance piece. He probably should have ditched the book entirely and just staged it as HOW TO SUCCEED SUITE for a dance company, except that I imagine the whole reason that production existed was because Daniel Radcliffe wanted to do it.

For me, the best productions of HOW TO SUCCEED are cast with a stage full of character actors who can also move well enough to perform numbers like "Brotherhood of Man." Ashford cast a stage full of dancers who had to pretend to be character types and it just did not, in any way, work.

There was a story about the original production of THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS that Tommy Tune really wanted the male ensemble to look like the football players that they were supposed to be and he couldn't get that look with a group of dancers. So he cast a bunch of people who looked like football players and taught them to dance. Ashford should have done the same.
