I want to say that I've rethought my response a bit since I posted last night. I agree that even simulation, and even with an intimacy director there to help guide things and keep things safe, doesn't guarantee that it's going to be psychologically healthy. Especially night after night.

As I said originally, I think Usher is a role, in general, that carries a hell of a lot of emotional baggage, and I assume that must be so for everyone who's played it so far. Some actors can somehow handle that, and some understandably can't.

I was also thinking of the encounter Louis has in Central Park in Angels In America - but that was more the language involved, it wasn't as graphic physically. But there are also shows like Hello Again where every scene involves a graphic sexual encounter, and some of them not 100% consensual in context.
