... I found this production to be inexplicably mediocre in so many ways - but it is also yet another one where I wonder if the director or producers or anyone read the script and paid any attention.

a) The magic of the MC is that you love him for quite a while before the dark side appears (Joel Grey was a master at this) - very similar to the arc of the Leading Player in Pippin. But just as the recent Pippin made the Leading Player a grotesque dangerous Character from page one, so here Eddie Redmayne is a grotesque, disturbing, slithering serpent from page on. So there is no show to follow.

b) I have seen probably 9 productions of CABARET, including the original production, and one in Vienna. During Wilkommen, when the MC gets ti 'Even the band is beautiful!', there is a raucous music break. There has ALWAYS been a girls band on stage - maybe actual musicians, maybe just ensemble girls miming being the sexy girls band. In this production no one - director, producers, choreographer, music director, actors ... no one seemed to mention how bizarre it is that after this line, the AFM men and women in the two side balconies, in their black shirts and slacks, just stand up in place and play this music. They are not in the show or the world of the show. One spends a zillion dollars to create this show, and then let a famous moment in the show - one that the text demands, just go for nothing. Well, the whole production is about Eddie, so what dos it matter?

c) In Act 1 Scene 6, Sally enters in a fur coat. Its really cold in Berlin, and she spent almost all of her money on it - nor knowing she has about to be fired. She later sells the coat to pay for her abortion. Once again, no one involved in the production seemed to have been bothered about the story. Here Sally talks about a fur coat but where a kind of green bathrobe with a green feather collar. You know. $19.99 at Target. WTF?

I truly found nothing to like in this production except for Herr Schultz. But was in a different show. One that is called CABARET, not CABARET AT THE KIT KAT CLUB. So actually - since they have changed the name of the show, maybe we can pretend its not CABARET at all.
