Bells was a perfect late-1950s musical comedy, great score, great star vehicle, great production numbers, solid comic premise. For its time it offered a great star performance and a great Styne-Comedn & Green score. Sadly, the show is not revivable because the plot premise no longer makes sense in our age of cell phones. There are no answering services. Also, many of the scenes play as television show styled skits not dramatically effective for a modern audience. There is also a fair amount of filler material in the score - Drop That Name, Midas Touch, MuChaCha, Salzburg (almost all in Act 2). |
