It was terrible and dumb in the 2002 revival. I think it was a genuine mistake -- it also didn't sound good. It doesn't on the recording either. It sounds forced and inelegant, at best. It sounds like someone just pasted those Little Red and Jack parts in there. It is just worse writing, and not good dramatically either. I really really dislike this change, and I don't understand how Sondheim heard it in rehearsal and in previews and thought it was not only good but presumably better? And I don't know how Lapine and Tunick and Gemignani all went with it. (It may well have been Lapine who thought of it and wanted it, and he was wrong, as was Sondheim -- about this and all the changes made for that revival, but this one especially).
