For me, I found the effort to make the connection between the 3 songs a bit too obvious on one hand, and not really necessary on the other. Also, it really misses the Sondheimian touch of, say, a Now/Later/Soon, where there's a trio sequence that really has fun making the 3 songs work together. The trio as is feels just rather tacked on. Also, the bit of rhythmic contortion to get "in the belly of the wolf" in there, again, just feels too effortful.

BTW, there already is a musical connection between these songs, and also "Moments In The Woods," and even a bit with "No More," and that's the use of a similar accompaniment figure (something I can try to explain further if you'd like) even though it's a bit different for each song. I call it the "discovery" motif, though I'm not sure if Sondheim really thought to name it. It's a nice subliminal way to link the songs without having to be so obvious about it. And even if the audience doesn't hear that musical similarity, I think it's clear to most people that these moments in the show are similar - but do we have to literally show that they connect by having them sing together? I don't think so.

Ultimately, I think he got it right the first time, and, well, "I like it the way that it was." ;-)

The only musical change I did like in that revival was the use of an ominous chime figure after they kill the Giant - a nod to the message of "No One Is Alone" - even though they needed to kill her to save their world, that's still a tragic decision. That was interesting. The other changes (including the new lyrics for the middle of "Last Midnight," where the Witch steals the baby, etc - which was also very awkwardly staged) just seemed like ideas that might have looked good on paper but didn't work in execution.
