That is sad to hear, but it doesn't sound as if the materials that were on the third floor will disappear entirely from the library. Maybe I'm misreading something, or maybe what it says at the link is not accurate, but that's what it sounds like to me. At the link you posted, I saw this: "Our Art and Music collections will ultimately be located in a beautiful new space on the second floor of Central Library."

Also this in the questions section:

"Will BPL be eliminating any of its current collections as part of the project?

"No. Central Library’s collections will remain on site and available to patrons at all times. Less-frequently borrowed collections may be moved to a staff-accessible storage space but can be requested from a staff member at any time."

Of course, about 10 or 15 years ago, NYPL had a completely moronic person in charge who had plans that would have done incredible damage. I know that librarians were deeply disturbed about what this person was doing, as were patrons who were aware of it. Fortunately, I think there was enough protest that the person was replaced, but not till after some damage had been done. I think some of this person's decisions were, very fortunately, reversed before too much permanent damage was done.

One thing that happened, something that I guess was minor in the larger scheme of things, was the disappearance of the almost complete collection of the British Plays of the Year series of annual books that were at the Mid-Manhattan for borrowing. As far as I can tell, they were not moved, as you might have hoped, to Performing Arts, not even to the third floor there, or kept available off-site but available by request. They just disappeared completely from NYPL.
