The Met does use dynamic pricing. Their software system "Tessitura" was one of the forerunners of the technology.
It depends on the opera where you might want to sit even if price wasn't a concern. "Close enough to see the performers but far enough to see the spectacle" at the Met sounds like Center Parterre, maybe J all the way through S.
By all means dress up, wear something beautiful. Plenty of people will be doing the same even though most people will be dressed casually.
