This is probably a naive question based on my limited exposure to the show. The only productions of Merrily I've seen are the film of the West End version, the stripped-down Fiasco version at Roundabout, and this one. I could quibble with aspects of each, but they all seemed fine. It seems like a fine show. The material seems fine.

But, apparently, for several decades, it was NOT considered to be a fine show, and in fact was considered to be extremely problematic. Not just the original production, which did unwise things like cast teenagers, but the material itself. But I'm not sure I understand what was so wrong with it that's now been corrected. The framing device is completely different, but besides that and casting adults rather than teenagers, what exactly did this production do that its predecessors did not? What exactly was wrong with the show in the first place?
