Many have speculated over the years, including Sondheim himself. Who knows for sure? Many good shows "fail." Merrily did not preview out of town, and it should have. The material itself, and the cast, needed work. The show was sloppy, especially in its early previews. Also, it was being rewritten extensively, every night. The choreographer was replaced, along with one of the leads. The design was confusing. Added to the backwards chronology, this resulted in terrible word-of-mouth. Scabarous even. The show improved with every performance, and by the time it opened, it was in fine shape, but most (not all) of the reviews were bad, and referenced the troubled previw period. It seemed as if its fate was sealed. And despite the enormous success of the current production, Merrily still has its detractors, as recent posts on this site attest. It's a very experimental musical, like nearly all Sondheim shows, including his last.
