There are very clear milestones *when* a movie product needs to advertised and clear objectives as to *what* you're trying to achieve - create awareness, increase excitement, call to action, increase social engagement, repeat viewings, etc.

There is almost nothing to be gained 5+ months ahead of a movie premiere except creating awareness that it's coming. If there are people watching the Tony awards who were unaware of this movie, they are now. There's no point in throwing away more money on an ambiguous goal. Universal will be better served spending their money closer to the premiere. And they know it and that's why they'll do exactly that.
