My thoughts so far

My thoughts on the first half of the CBS broadcast:

The opening number didn't seem "Broadway" at all, either the song itself or the choreography. It felt like some weird parody of the late 60s. I don't remember the last time the opening number didn't get a standing ovation. And there was NO ONE standing.

I would buy a ticket to see Jay-Z and Alicia Keys in Hell's Kitchen, and Pete Townshend in Tommy. Oh, they're not in the show? Could have fooled me (and lots of people buying tickets right now).

Dayna Taymor winning Director for The Outsiders made me think that The Outsiders is winning for Best Musical. But Suffs won Best Score and Best Book. The times that a show has won Best Book and Best Score and lost Best Musical are when some big commercial juggernaut like Phantom of the Opera wins, or a show that's not eligible for Best Score wins like The Lion King. And The Outsiders isn't in either category. So is Suffs going to win? Or The Outsiders and Suffs going to take enough votes that Hell's Kitchen will make it through? The winner of Best Musical will be completely unclear until that envelope gets opened.
