Tony predictions, Oscar predictions, etc., are not a science. It's making educated guesses based on what you've seen (or haven't seen), what buzz you've heard (or haven't heard), and how you interpret the history of past winners. Based on their videos, I don't think Sam Eckmann or David Buchanan ever present their predictions as being based on secret info from industry insiders. Clearly, it's their opinion & speculation, filtered through seeing the shows.

Besides each year, there are Oscar pundits who claimed to have talked to dozens and dozens of Academy voters, and their accuracy in predictions is often no better than pundits who didn't speak to anyone in Hollywood. What is, however, somewhat quantifiable is a track record. On April 30, Eckmann and Buchanan scored a 72.94% accuracy rate in predicting the Tony nominations at GoldDerby, which is notable in a season that was wide-open as this one was.

By and large, I think Tony voters pick who they think is most deserving, but that's a subjective call, and what makes predictions so tricky to make.
