ryhog, I think you are right that the GoldDerby pundits don't seem to have connections in the theater community, so they don't have any inside information. They don't know any more than we do, although they have the advantage that they've seen all the shows.

EvFoDr, I agree with you that the Tony voter gets a bit mischaracterized. Sure, there are aspects of "I'm going to vote for people I'm close friends with" and other things that are more about personal qualities, but Tony voters generally seem to be less sentimental than Oscar voters. They don't seem to care that much if someone has lost a zillion times already, for example, and they don't seem to spread the wealth purposely. The Band's Visit won in 10 of 11 categories it was nominated in, and only one award was won by its three Best Musical competitors combined. It would not be that surprising to find that one of Hell's Kitchen/The Outsiders/Suffs ends up dominating, taking almost all of the musical awards that aren't being won by Merrily. (The problem right now is we don't know which one of the three is going to do it!) I think your friends are typical Tony voters in that they seem more concerned about who deserves to win in each category more than anything else.
