| As I wrote, this is a wild-card race and I wouldn't be surprised at all to see it go to Suffs or The Outsiders—and I won't say which way I actually voted. But there's at least an argument to be made that the music in Stereophonic, as presented in the show, serves the show more perfectly than the fuller and more conventional scores do. (Perhaps analogously: Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's "You Must Love Me" is part of the score of the Evita movie in a musical-theater way that Adam Schlesinger's "That Thing You Do!" is not for the movie That Thing You Do. But the latter song is absolutely essential to the operations of its film in a way that the former is not, and I will insist to the end of my days that Schlesinger should have won the Oscar for Best Song that year over LW&R.) | |
