ironically, I think Bobbie proposing to Andy would have made more sense in the era of the original production (or earlier) when it could have been more about Andy's ability to legitimize his appearance as straight (Bobbie would be Andy's "beard"), and would lend an extra layer to Bobbie's line "marry me, and they'll all leave us alone."

But of course it wasn't written that way - and yes, it makes NO SENSE in this new version, because Andy is clearly not in the closet, and Bobbie proposing to him is simply idiotic (instead of rash, as it was originally).

But did Sondheim really approve "fella"? Or even suggest it? In the same vein as, did he really suggest "harassing me" as a substitute for "raping me" in the Witch's Rap in the revised Into The Woods Jr? (Revised, because the rap wasn't there originally.) "Harassing" feels completely wrong in context. It's hard for me to imagine that Sondheim was the one to come up with that.
