Interesting. For me he was the most complete Gary Essendine I have ever seen, and I've seen (and liked) a few. For one thing, he was the right age. I've seen more than a couple of actors in their 50's, 60's and even 70's play Gary and they come off as delusional and a bit mad, deep in denial of their waning potency and the faces they see staring at them in the mirror. (Admittedly that can be funny, but it's not really what Coward wrote.) Coward was 40 when he wrote the play and Andrew Scott was 43 when he did it at The Old Vic.

Secondly, he- with the aid of some progressive casting- made more sense of Gary's sexuality. I never saw Coward live but in the bits and pieces of film I've seen he does not exactly exude great sexuality, certainly not heterosexuality. He's been played by gruff alpha character actors (George C. Scott, Donald Sinden, Frank Langella) and elegant matinée idols (Kevin Kline, Alex Jennings) and superannuated gay imps (Brian Bedford) but I've never seen him played by a genuinely fluid and sexual-charged actor the way Andrew Scott played him. (Normally I wouldn't have loved that they rejigged Joanna Lyppiatt's gender, but in this case it felt like it made greater sense of the play, although Enzo Cilenti wouldn't have been my choice for the role.)

As to him entering at 11, I think Coward has written that and I felt that there was great variety and nuance in his performance. It wasn't like he went from 11 to 30: he started at 11, dropped down to 5, and brought it back up to a 9 by the final curtain.

I also adored Luke Thallon as Roland Maule. Hilarious, weird, sad, irritating. I hope he plays Gary some day. I loved him in PATRIOTS and hope I can see his Hamlet at the RSC this winter.
